Hands and Minds on Science

Science is behind many different things that appear to be  quite complicated, confusing and at times even magical.  I believe that science lab should be a place where complicated science becomes organized, and meaningful.  Where understanding and aha replace our confusion.Our minds get filled with many questions and desire to find out whys and hows.  Some experiments give a logical  explantion for magical reactions, while others fill us with great wonder for God's creation.

In a Science lab students see, touch and hear to learn for life. They realize that their observations can be different and still relevent. That there are different answers, not wrong answers. At times no answers just more questions.

Science lab should be a very safe place. All rules are safety rules. I love what I do here at O.L.G.C School. Science Lab is my pride and the students bring joy to my heart.

OLGC is very fortunate to have a Science Lab that all grades use.   Here are some things that have happened in the lab:

• Kindergarten hypothesizes sinking and floating objects.
  

• First Grade makes log books on animal homes. They learned population dynamics and predicted with logic why a certain populations should go up or down.
  

• Second grade investigates all the parts of the plants and how they work. They observe stem cross- sections under the microscope. Used water, prisms and refracting goggles to experience refraction of white light. They related this experience to observing a rainbow.

• Fourth Grade creates a pull through model to study zones of the ocean and learn about some of the inhabitants of each zone.
  

• Fifth Grade makes model of plant and animal cells.
  

• Middle School learns about Laboratory Safety & Scientific Methods.
  

• Sixth Grade enjoys mystery containers, where they had to describe the materials inside the container without looking. Use their past experiences to make up for the lack of the sense of sight. They set up their long term experiments to observe weathering. The work with control and experimental groups, and get hands-on experience of constants and variables. Experiment with water’s latent heat.
  

• Seventh grade works with the compound microscope. They prepared slides and observed them under low power as well as high power objectives. observed photosynthesis in lettuce and identified evolving oxygen gas. They also investigated pigments such as chlorophyll, xanthophylls, carotene from lettuce and fall leaves.
  

• Eighth Grade determines density of different materials.
